About this Job

As part of the Technology Development Team in the Semiconductor Fab Solutions business of Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH, you work in an interdisciplinary environment on the development of an innovative X-ray-based 3D inspection and metrology solution for the semiconductor industry. In this role, you take responsibility for advancing key X-ray technologies and help shape future technology generations. You combine technological excellence with a strong hands-on mentality and work closely with system development, product development, and international technology partners.

Your Role

  • Drive the technological advancement of the X-ray beamline and the underlying imaging technologies for future semiconductor inspection systems.
  • Evaluate and develop technologies along the entire imaging chain – from X-ray sources and detector technologies through reconstruction methods to dose optimization.
  • Develop simulation and digital twin models and use these to assess and optimize X-ray imaging systems.
  • Design, plan, and conduct experiments on development and prototype systems and derive technological recommendations from the results.
  • Contribute your scientific expertise to interdisciplinary development projects and advise system development, product management, and development teams on technological issues.
  • Work closely with our development partner and coordinate beamline-related technology topics.
  • Identify new technologies and evaluate their potential for future product generations.
  • Actively shape the patent strategy in the field of X-ray technologies and, through invention disclosures and building a strong IP portfolio, contribute to the technological differentiation of our products.
  • Represent your area of expertise within the company and towards international development partners.

Your Profile

  • Above-average university degree or PhD in physics, electrical engineering, medical engineering, or a comparable scientific-technical discipline.
  • Several years of experience in X-ray physics, imaging, computed tomography, or comparable high‑technology applications.
  • Solid knowledge in X-ray imaging, particularly in one or more of the following areas:
    • X-ray sources
    • Detector technologies
    • Reconstruction methods
    • Radiation physics and dose assessment
    • Simulation and digital twins
  • Enjoy experimental work and possess a strong hands-on mentality.
  • Ability to analyze complex scientific questions and translate them into technological solutions.
  • Strong interest in innovation, technology development, and intellectual property.
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoyment in working in international, interdisciplinary teams.
  • Very good command of English, both spoken and written.
  • Willingness to undertake international business trips.
