Your role and responsibilities

The mission of this team is to bring modern and disruptive power electronic solutions from research into product development. We improve our products by holistic optimization, pushing forward novel converter topologies as well as optimizing key components. By joining us, you will participate in idea generation at the frontier of academic research and industrial applications, as well as in the development of advanced technologies for ABB’s products.

The work model for the role is:

The main responsibilities include

  • Simulate, compare, and optimize power electronic topologies and converter systems for a wide range of applications, including system-level studies and performance evaluations

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues within the team and across disciplines, sharing expertise, mentoring team members, and contributing to a culture of innovation and continuous learning

  • Design, implement, commission, and experimentally validate advanced power converter systems, from proof-of-concept models to full-scale demonstrators

  • Develop and advance innovative power electronic topologies, control strategies, and converter solutions for emerging applications

 

Qualifications for the role

  • PhD in Engineering, or a Master's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience in power electronic converter design, optimization, and testing, or in system-level studies, including architecture trade-offs for large power converters, scaling across varying voltage and power levels, and/or grid interactions under dynamic operating conditions

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken

    Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: 

  • Hands-on experience in commissioning and testing full-scale converter systems, including back-to-back power flow setups

  • Experience in the design, implementation, and validation of high-power medium-voltage converters and/or grid-connected three-phase inverters

  • Strong knowledge of applied control theory and power converter control, including experience with embedded hardware development and programming of FPGAs (VHDL) and/or microcontrollers for power electronic applications

  • Experience in optimization-driven power stage design, supported by simulation and experimental validation
