About this Job

Job Summary: 

The Instrumentation & Electrical Commissioning Technician is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, commissioning, and optimizing industrial electrical, instrumentation, and automated control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. This role supports the startup, testing, troubleshooting, calibration, and ongoing performance of process control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, instrumentation, and associated electrical equipment. Working closely with engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel, the technician ensures systems operate effectively while supporting production quality, safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commission, test, and verify electrical, instrumentation, and control systems during startup, maintenance, and project activities.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, instrumentation, and associated electrical equipment to ensure reliable operation.
  • Perform inspections, calibrations, preventive maintenance, and functional testing of instrumentation and control devices.
  • Assist with the programming, configuration, and optimization of control systems to improve process performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to identify, diagnose, and resolve electrical and control system issues.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, environmental requirements, industry standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of commissioning activities, system modifications, calibrations, repairs, and maintenance performed.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by providing technical expertise, training personnel, and participating in root cause investigations and corrective actions.

Minimum Qualifications & Education:

  • Associate’s degree in Industrial Automation or Electrical Engineering

  • PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens) Studio 5000

  • HMI development, FactoryTalk View

  • SCADA systems design and programming.

  • Troubleshooting skills with electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic control systems and components.

  • Process instrumentation, such as flow, level, temperature transmitters, controllers and final control elements. 

  • Industrial networks and communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus)

  • Managed ethernet switch configuration and maintenance.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals

  • Variable frequency drive programming and configuration.

  • Industrial 480VAC motor starters and controls, configuration and programming of motor relays.

  • 24VDC control circuitry design and maintenance.

  • Experience with diagnostic equipment, process calibrators, meters, meggars.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Automation or Electrical Engineeering

Work Environment:

  • This position will include office work, but some work will be performed in all-weather conditions outdoors.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must work in compliance with the Florence Copper’s site safety program.
