About Us

We are Ocado Technology and we empower global grocery retailers with cutting-edge cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. Our Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) powers highly automated Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs), enabling efficient, single-pick online grocery delivery

About the Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will manage a team of Firmware Engineers responsible for the development, support and on-going day to day maintenance of the firmware associated with the Ocado Mobile Robots (OMRs). The core development team for OMRs is based in Athens and this role will require regular contact and collaboration with all the disciplines across the development team.

You will ensure that the team delivers according to the product development schedule, new features, improvements and enhancements following sound engineering principles and best practice ways of working. In addition you will ensure the team supports existing products in the field, investigating issues and resolving problems in a timely manner. You will work in partnership with the Project Manager to tackle the highest priorities and ensure the greatest benefit is gained from the team.

You will also take care of the performance and wellbeing of the team members, keeping them aligned and giving them sufficient autonomy to do their work.

  • Working with the product development teams and Product Manager to set the long term requirements for the OMRS firmware strategy
  • Responsible for the performance of the team
  • Responsible for ensuring solutions are supported by sufficient Engineering analysis, testing and other evidence to minimise the risk while still meeting aggressive timelines
  • Responsible for the quality of the output from the team, both the quality of the design itself and the quality of the information communicated in order for development to progress at pace, manufacture, installation and on-going performance of the products
  • Responsible to ensuring there is day to day support of products in the field; this includes making changes and updates where needed and also immediate support where issues require it
  • Authority on the technical decisions of the team
  • Day to day team support including administration, regular one to ones, team meetings and guidance where needed
  • Can identify where the team doesn't have the specialist knowledge required and call in others internally or from outside of the organisation to support decisions and solution development
  • Accountable for the quality and timely delivery of own work
  • Supports the selection of new Engineers as part of recruitment to fill vacancies within the team

About you

  • Past experience leading a team of Mechanical and/or Software Engineers that design, develop and support high reliability, safety critical embedded systems; this includes acting as the authority on the technical decisions
  • A strong understanding of the principles of both Software and Mechanical Engineering, and experience of product development in industry with the ability to make trade offs between solving a problem physically or in software
  • Experience of work planning and allocation, generating realistic schedules and tracking progress against them
  • Understanding of the principles of embedded systems, functional safety, complex electro-mechanical products and how to manage challenges these systems present
  • A background of hands-on development of embedded systems that have gone into production
