Summary

The Controls Technician is a key, hands-on role responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automation systems and industrial controls to ensure optimal equipment performance. This role requires a blend of programming fundamentals, hands-on troubleshooting, and preventative/corrective maintenance skills. The primary goal is to complete projects on time and within budget, ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of our industrial equipment. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager and may provide technical guidance or mentorship to junior technicians and maintenance staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Programming and Controls:

  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs (A/B SLC500, Control Logix) and industrial computer controls.

  • Modify and troubleshoot existing HMI screen interfaces and PLC software; provide feedback on detailed software design descriptions.

  • Install, program, and troubleshoot adjustable frequency AC/DC motor drives, servo motor controls, and robotics.

  • Use a computer to interpret PLC ladder diagrams and check I/O functions to diagnose and repair issues.

  • Interpret and accurately work from electrical schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams to install, maintain, and repair control panels and industrial equipment.

  • Project and Engineering Management:

  • Provide technical, hands-on support for the installation, commissioning, and validation of facility and equipment projects.

  • Evaluate new equipment and analyze alternative solutions to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Work closely with the Controls Engineer to maintain and standardize software across plant equipment and provide overall project support.

  • Provide technical support and training to plant electricians, plant departments, and maintenance teams as needed.

  • Maintenance and Repair:

  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair industrial electrical systems, motors, controls, and components, including 3-phase and single-phase circuits.

  • Diagnose and replace faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.

  • Perform work based on schedules, schematics, and work orders.

  • Use a full range of electronic test equipment, computer hardware, and software.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. At times, may be required to supervise the daily activities of other employees working on projects they are managing. At times will also be responsible for supervising/managing outside contractors.

Qualifications

Education or Experience

  • Associates degree (A.A.S. or A.O.S.) in Industrial Automation or Electrical Engineering Technology, equivalent military/trade school training, four or more years of relevant experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in Rockwell PLC and HMI software troubleshooting, diagnostics, and minor program modifications.
  • Knowledge of industrial hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to apply and tune closed-loop control systems (e.g., PID loops).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and panel layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical practices, tools, and materials.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
