Position Overview
We are seeking an Experienced Systems Engineer to join the Tennant Company (TNC) Robotics Field and Factory Support, (FFS), Engineering organization. This role supports the Technical Assistance Team, Customer Success team, Automation Success Deployment team, and Tennant Service teams, as well as execution of design improvement project execution. The role is also responsible for engineering related support activities associated with improving manufacturability for the manufacturing teams and supplier base for the robotic products.
The FFS Systems Engineer also works closely with senior systems engineers, electrical, software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to transfer learnings from production and field environments into the updated product requirements to drive optimizations of future subsystem solutions. Success in this role is measured by technical decision quality, production execution reliability, customer satisfaction, warranty incident rate reduction, service diagnostic efficiency, and timely design improvement project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Systems & Requirements Engineering
- Support maintenance and redesign of systems and subsystems to improve robustness, informing requirement sets for future New Product Development.
- Provide FFS based input into establishing functional requirements and performance targets for electrical and control subsystems, including power, communications, and safety.
- Create and maintain system documentation such as requirements, interface definitions, and verification artifacts.
- Utilize requirements and collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, Jama, Visure, or similar.
Electrical Integration & Controls Support
Contribute to the integration of electrical systems, including:
Wiring harnesses, connectors, and cable routing
Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs)
Controllers and interfaces to embedded software
Power distribution and protection (fuses, circuit breakers)
Support robustness based redesign of machine control systems, including closed‑loop control functions.
Assist with integration and testing of communication interfaces and networks such as CAN, RS‑232, Ethernet, and USB.
Participate in electrical and controls troubleshooting across development, production, and fielded customer machine population environments.
Verification, Testing & Compliance
- Support development and execution of verification and validation activities to determine and turn on and off root causes to product issues via design of experiments.
- Document analysis of data to ensure requirements traceability and performance.
- Participate in design risk assessments using tools such as DFMEA and HARA.
- Assist with regulatory and compliance activities, including UL, IEC, EMC, and related testing, especially in evaluating proposed changes to alternate components.
- Help identify and resolve field presented system‑level integration issues through testing and structured problem solving.
Execution, Prototyping & Manufacturing Support
- Contribute to Proofs‑of‑Concept (POCs) and early prototypes to validate design assumptions and reduce technical risk.
- Actively participate in design reviews, providing field or operational based subsystem‑level technical input.
- Support product lifecycle by bridging engineering, manufacturing, and service, ensuring designs are practical to assemble, and provide business and customer uptime experience objectives.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Work as part of cross‑functional teams including Systems, Electrical, Software, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Technical Assistance Center, field Service, application and sales organizations, and external vendors.
- Communicate technical information clearly to peers, manufacturing partners, and leadership, including non technical colleagues.
- Own structured problem solving and root cause analysis activities.
Education & Experience
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in systems engineering, electrical engineering, application engineering of complex systems, mechatronics, automation or controls‑focused roles.
- Hands‑on experience with electrical system integration, testing, or deployment in complex products.
- Experience working on cross‑functional engineering and business teams.
- Experience with troubleshooting field failures, complex root cause determination, solution development, verification, and technical documentation.
- Experience with supplier and operational design for manufacturability issue resolution.
- Exposure to production support, manufacturing ramp‑up, or end‑of‑line testing.
- Familiarity with task management and defect tracking tools such as Jira.
Preferred
- Experience supporting robotics, autonomous systems, or advanced electro‑mechanical products.
- Familiarity with batteries, chargers, power electronics, motors, actuators, or control systems.
- Experience with an object‑oriented programming language such as C#, Python, or C++.
- Working knowledge of electrical modeling or analysis tools (e.g., MathCad, PSpice, MATLAB).
Key Attributes for Success
- Strong foundation in electrical and systems engineering with eagerness to grow.
- Comfortable working in ambiguity and learning complex systems.
- Hands‑on, execution‑oriented engineer who follows through.
- Effective collaborator across disciplines and functions, often with non technical colleagues.
- Curious mindset with interest in robotics and advanced technologies.
