About this Job

The Software and Electronics Engineering Group collaborates with every research area at the Laboratory to create systems that accomplish their objectives in real-world scenarios and in unpredictable surroundings. Our engineers develop complex software and electronics systems, from concept to realization, for a variety of prototypes. We utilize the applied research approach to work on capabilities such as pointing and stabilization techniques to enable efficient space-based laser communication, and to build prototypes such as a ground-based sensor to detect biological threats in real time. Our engineers are developing airborne visual navigation; flight controls; and on-orbit pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems. We have expertise in space-qualified electronics, precision controls, firmware, embedded software, and application software.

Position Description

Group 76, Software and Electronics Engineering, is seeking Summer Interns to join our team.

Under the guidance of MIT Lincoln Laboratory technical staff, Summer Interns will contribute to the design, development, and testing of software and/or electronics systems supporting a range of applications, which may includeembedded or application software, firmware, precision controls, or PCB design, depending on project assignment. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers across the full development lifecycle, from concept and analysis through prototyping, integration, and validation.

A successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment. The candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing tasks independently as well as part of a team, whiledemonstratingstrong initiative and problem-solving skills. Must be able to communicate clearly with teammates, administrators, and outside collaborators.

Summer Research Program Overview

The Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers. As an SRP intern, you’ll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events—all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers.

  • Internships are typically 10–12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates, typically May through early August.
  • Housing support is available for eligible non-local interns, including access to discounted university housing in Boston and a one-time taxable relocation payment.
  • Complimentary daily shuttle transportation is provided from Boston-based housing to and from the Lab.

Compensation

Hourly pay rates are based on the highest academic year or degree completed before the internship start date.

Freshman year completed: $25.00/hour Sophomore year completed: $27.00/hour Junior year completed: $29.00/hour 4th year of 5 year program completed, no degree conferred: $32.00/hour Bachelors completed: $34.50/hour Bachelors + 1, one year of graduate study completed: $36.50/hour Bachelors + 2, two years of graduate study completed: $38.00/hour MS completed: $39.00/hour MS + 1, one year of graduate study completed after the MS: $41.00/hour MS + 2, two years of graduate study completed after the MS: $42.50/hour MS + 3, three years of graduate study completed after the MS: $43.50/hour

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, able to qualify for andmaintaina Secret level DoW security clearance

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering,Mechatronics,or a related field

  • Self-driven and self-disciplined, with a strong work ethic

  • Demonstratedproficiencyin oral, written, and graphical communication skills

  • Comfortable and productive in a highly computerized work environment

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with others respectfully and develop productive working relationships

  • Able to work constructively alone or in larger teams to meet the needs of the project

Desired (any of the following)

Software

  • Experience with Python, C, or C++

  • Familiarity with Linux and/or real-time operating systems (RTOS)

  • Exposure toDevSecOpspractices and tools

Firmware

  • Experience with FPGA development using VHDLorVerilog

Electronics

  • Experience with PCB design and layout

  • Familiarity with analog, RF,digital,mixed-signal, or power electronics

  • Familiarity with circuit simulation tools such as PSpice

Controls

  • Coursework or hands-on experience with system dynamics

  • Familiarity with sensors and actuators

  • Experience with signal processing

  • Exposure to state estimation techniques

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
