Job Description Summary
This position reports to the Embedded SW Platform Leader and is responsible for value creation through full life cycle ownership of products and services for the GPG and NGGC.
Beyond technical leadership, this role carries a strong people management mandate, guiding, developing, and empowering the Bilbao R&D team throughout all phases of the engineering process.
The Sr Engineering Manager will:
- Lead and grow a high performing team, ensuring clarity of expectations, coaching, and career development.
- Drive planning, prioritization, and execution across the team, being fully accountable for quality, timelines, cost, and team engagement.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, psychological safety, continuous learning, and operational discipline.
As a senior leader, you will ensure the structured execution of all R&D commitments while creating an environment that enables individuals and teams to succeed.
Job Description
Major Responsibilities: Be accountable for the GPG/NGGC Product Line in GridBeats while leading a team of engineers in a highly matrixed organization, collaborating with Product Management, Operations, CoEs, and R&D peers.
People & Team Leadership (enhanced emphasis):
Provide clear direction, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for the Bilbao R&D team.
Build and maintain a strong team culture aligned with GE leadership behaviors.
Develop talent through ongoing feedback, career planning, and skills development initiatives.
Ensure workload balance, capacity planning, and effective resource allocation across projects.
Drive team accountability and ownership, encouraging initiative and responsible decision‑making.
Promote diversity, inclusion, and respectful collaboration across all functions.
Technical & Delivery Leadership:
Lead and drive specification, roadmap, design, development, industrialization, launch, and life‑cycle management.
Translate customer and business requirements into clear engineering specifications.
Facilitate and lead discovery sessions and the creation of value‑engineering and reference solutions.
Drive initiatives that optimize team efficiency and resource utilization.
Build trusted technical advisor relationships with customers and teammates.
Collaborate globally with CoE teams, providing training, mentorship, and architectural guidance.
Drive strategic initiatives and proactively identify risks, mitigation approaches, and delivery challenges.
Ensure high‑quality engineering outputs through strong technical reviews and mentoring.
Prepare formal engineering documentation (design documents, code reviews, release reports, etc.).
Lead technical discussions, design reviews, and whiteboard sessions.
Maintain high standards of code quality and development practices (DevOps, CI/CD, unit testing).
Eliminate non‑value‑added processes and leverage expertise to simplify the full value stream.
Performance Measurement
Success in this role is measured by:
Quality, timeliness, and cost of R&D deliverables.
Team health, engagement, retention, and capability development.
Effective leadership of the NGGC/GPG Bilbao team and alignment with organizational priorities.
Contribution to product competitiveness, innovation, and customer value.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university or college and /or equivalent experience.
Solid and strong experience in leading software developments.
Entrepreneurial mindset and strong team player.
Demonstrated experience in autonomous problem-solving with proposal of adapted solutions.
Strong communication skills with ability to influence at both technical and managerial levels.
Proven track record in people leadership, including coaching, performance management, and team building.
Knowledge & Experience
Proven ability to create a Trusted technical advisor relationship with customers and teammates
Proven and relevant experience working on projects for Generation, Transmission, Distribution, and Industry.
Relevant track record in customer value creation, i.e., demonstrated ability to select key product differentiators.
Strong interpersonal, influencing, and team building skills; proven ability to work well in a matrix environment
High level presentation skills.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to think expansively, innovatively, and laterally in a global, complex environment.
Clear thinker with an ability to focus on the “critical few”.
People leader capable of both driving and motivating global team members to succeed.
Understanding of power systems and electricity market optimization problems.
Familiar with Agile processes.
Relevant experience in the most PowerGrid communication Protocols (61850 full suite, IEC104, DNP3, Modbus, etc.).
