Position Summary: The Robotics Coach is responsible for assisting students in competing and non-competing robotic teams to achieve competency in the subject matter content, including, but not limited to, programming, budgeting, marketing, engineering, documentation, electronics, and circuitry. This position will be scheduled to meet 10 to 20 hours per week. Typically, there are two to three individual after-school meetings, increasing to three to five meetings when the team gets closer to competition. A mentor must attend all meetings, competitions, and scrimmages until children are dismissed.     

Duties and Responsibilities:

Club/Team Supervision and Instruction

  • Students meet three times a week for two to three hours at a time. Competitions and some club meetings may occur during the weekend. Coaches must attend all competitions from September through February or until the competition season is completed, including State and World meets.
  • Provide instruction in robotics techniques during robotics club meeting times.
  • Adhere to First Robotics Mentoring Guidelines.
  • Serve as a mentor to the team. 
  • Coordinate volunteer and parent involvement.
  • Document all events using photos and video.
  • Actively supervise all scheduled robotics team meetings and additional meetings that may be required during the busiest parts of the season.  
  • Plan travel arrangements for scrimmage and competition events.
  • Plan the intramural FTC robotics final competition event at Saint Andrew’s School once a year, including subsequent scrimmages.
  • Maintain team manual(s), Public and Internal Calendars, and other team-related documents. 
  • Collaboratively supervise the creation and maintenance of team portfolio and engineering notebook.
  • Assign and appropriately rotate students to specific sub-teams and tasks to develop the student's skills equally and help the teams achieve their goals. 
  • Maintain team advertising such as merchandise coordination and website maintenance.
  • Some weekends and nights are needed for practices and competitions.
  • Responsible for collaboration with the department chair for an end-of-year robotics showcase.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Team Supervisor/Department Chair.

Facility and Materials Management

  • Maintain labs and inventory.  
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment and keep the students focused on maintaining all safety protocols.
  • Maintain a budget, including requesting materials from the Department Chair within the budget-development cycle.

 

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher or pursuing a degree in a similar field
  • Previous experience with FIRST, VEX, or other organized robotics curricula is preferred; however, training is available.
  • Must be available to work some additional evening and weekend hours required for competitions. 
  • Java programming/Block programming knowledge is a plus.

Physical Demands:  Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, and for the majority of the work day. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds.
