About this Job

Put your robotics expertise to work! The ARM Institute is hiring an experienced, hands-on Robotics & Automation Engineer to expand our engineering team and drive innovation in manufacturing by completing process assessments and designing advanced automated systems.

This position is on site and full time at our headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA.

What We Do:

The ARM Institute currently helps small and medium manufacturers in Western Pennsylvania to adopt robotics automation and has started several initiatives for the Defense sustainment community to adopt robotics and automation. ARM has a goal to scale this risk reduction lab concept nationally and to manufacturers of all sizes. These automation risk reduction efforts include site visits, consultations, market research, analysis, design, simulation, and proof of concept in ARM’s 4,000 sq ft robotics lab. The lab consists of multiple robotic de-risking cells with the following capabilities: industrial robots, collaborative robots, 3D vision, 2D vision, welding, sanding/grinding, 3D scanning, linear rails, Rockwell PLCs, actuators, and several software simulation packages. The Hub has a variety of robotic arm brands, including Yaskawa, Fanuc, UR, Denso, and Epsom. It also has a variety of end of arm tooling, pneumatics, electrical-mechanical, and other accessory items.

What You’ll Do:

Reporting to the Principal Robotics Engineer, the Robotics Automation Engineer will work with other engineers and programs managers to use their skills to assist defense and commercial clients with their robotic and automation projects. The ARM Institute is a trusted third party that provides consultation and engineering services to reduce risks prior to a company's pursuit of automated solutions.

  • Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC-based automation systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Develop and modify HMI/SCADA systems for process monitoring and control.
  • Conduct manufacturing site visits to assess manufacturing processes for automation potential and report out results for clients
  • Perform engineering analysis using design and simulation software for client automation assessments
  • Design, program, and configure robotic de-risking cells to accomplish automation proof of concepts for manufacturing applications
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment
  • Communicate internally and externally with ARM leadership, vendors, RMH lab visitors, and manufacturing clients

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, software engineering, or another related technical field
  • At least 5 years of experience working in industrial automation
  • Demonstrated expertise in robotic cell and automated system design for manufacturing applications
  • Integrate industrial automation equipment using communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and OPC UA.
  • Proficiency with industrial control systems, machine vision, PLC and HMI programming, and ability to troubleshoot
  • Knowledge of LEAN manufacturing and manufacturing process design
  • Proficient with Robot programming (e.g., Fanuc, Yaskawa, UR)
  • Logical problem solving and demonstrated ability to organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion
  • Must be a self-starter, hands-on, and ability to work autonomously
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with ability to present project results
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
