About this Job

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world

At Bedrock, we’re moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we’re deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we’re working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You’ll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can’t touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team—we'd love to have you join us.

The Mission:

At Bedrock, we aren’t just building robots; we are redefining how the world moves earth. We are looking for a Senior level Robotics Application Engineer who thrives at the intersection of heavy machinery, cutting-edge autonomy, and real-world grit.

What You’ll Do:

In this role, you won't be stuck behind a desk. You’ll be the bridge between our advanced R&D lab and the rugged reality of a construction site. Your job is to take our autonomous excavators and make them perform - turning lines of code into moved dirt and satisfied customers. As a "Full-Stack" Robotics Engineer, you will own the success of our deployments through:

  • Deployment & Performance: Lead the onsite deployment of autonomous excavators. You’ll be responsible for defining equipment workflows to ensure we meet (and exceed) customer productivity goals.

  • Data-Driven Evaluation: Run evaluations on site data to predict autonomous performance and validate release readiness before the buckets start digging.

  • Real-Time Problem Solving: Debug complex issues across the entire stack—from hydraulic sensors and compute hardware to high-level behavior. Employ a breadth of technical knowledge to dig into both onboard and offboard code to keep the mission moving.

  • Technical Strategy: Collaborate closely with Partnerships to identify new customer sites that align with our product roadmap and provide technical feedback to our engineering team to influence the next generation of Bedrock systems.

  • Customer Partnership: Translate "robot-speak" into value. You will lead discussions on site progression, explain how the system integrates into our customers’ work, and how to maximize its performance on a job site.

What We’re Looking For:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a technical role focused on deployment, field engineering, or autonomous systems.

  • Hands-on experience with heavy machinery or mobile robotics is a massive plus.

Your Technical Toolkit:

We need a generalist who can navigate the complexities of a modern autonomous system.

  • Software - Proficiency in Python, Rust, C++, etc, Linux. Experience with version control and deploying code in "live" environments.

  • Systems - Strong understanding of robotics stacks – sensor fusion (LiDAR, GNSS, IMU), computer vision, motion planning, controls, embedded systems.

  • Hardware - Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems, CAN bus communication, and interact with industry debug tools.

  • Data - Experience with data visualization and analytical tools to turn raw logs into performance metrics.

Who You Are:

  • Adaptable: You are as comfortable in a hard hat and boots as you are in a terminal window.

  • Decisive: You can make high-stakes technical decisions onsite to minimize downtime.

  • Communicator: You can explain a Kalman Filter to a developer and a cycle-time improvement to a site foreman with equal clarity.

  • Willing Traveler: You love the "field" and are ready to be where the work is.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.

Bedrock Robotics is an autonomous construction technology company based in San Francisco, founded in 2024 by former leaders from Waymo. The company focuses on transforming the heavy construction equipment industry by enabling existing machinery to operate fully autonomously through its aftermarket hardware and software platform, the Bedrock Operator. The Bedrock Operator equips heavy equipment, starting with excavators, with a kit that includes LiDAR, GPS, inertial measurement units, high-definition cameras, and an in-cab computer. This system allows machines to operate continuously with high precision, enhancing project timelines, worker safety, and productivity tracking without permanent modifications to the equipment. Bedrock Robotics addresses challenges in the construction industry, such as labor shortages and the need for faster project completion, by enabling machines to work in demanding conditions where human operators would need breaks. The company has secured $80 million in funding and collaborates with various contractors and construction material suppliers to test and deploy its technology. Bedrock Robotics offers autonomy hardware and software kits, machine intelligence software, remote monitoring tools, and consultation services to help construction firms integrate autonomous technology into their workflows.
