About this Job
Reality Labs Research (RL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR across the spectrum. The Surreal research group at RL-R is solving the next generation of research challenges on the path to building future machine perception enabled technologies. We are building this research device to understand the world from a human's perspective and lay the foundation for Contextual AI experiences on future AR glasses. The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at RL is a new generation of end-to-end real-time 3D scene understanding systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, computer vision, large-scale reconstruction and localization, as well as large-scale online inference and optimization. The Surreal team is seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead and support a group of world-class researchers and engineers in order to support this initiative.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support a team of engineers and research scientists to build the full technology stack across Ai glasses and the cloud, integrating systems that span multi-modal LLMs and real-time computer vision
- Partner with Research Program Management in developing a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategy
- Be both a technical leader and people manager
- Communicate cross-functionally and drive engineering efforts
- Partner closely with many Meta internal partner teams to create shared roadmaps and deliver on the product vision
- Champion engineering and operational effectiveness, establishing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement for production ML/CV/Contextual AI pipelines
- Establish project frameworks and development processes
- Communicate with the leadership
Minimum Qualifications
- 6+ years of people management experience, including demonstrated success in creating and growing research engineering organizations (e.g., teams of 20+ scientists and engineers) and delivering production systems
- 12+ years of industry experience, including 5+ years as an individual contributor and 6 years managing, spanning software engineering, research, and technical management
- Demonstrated expertise and technical leadership in Multi-modal Large Language Models (LLMs), Computer Vision (including 3D Machine Perception), Robotics, and multi-sensor data fusion/optimization
- Demonstrated experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance management
- Leadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, drive best practices, and mentor team members
- MS degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a team to ship version one products, including developing and implementing machine learning and computer vision aspects of projects utilizing deep learning models on multi-sensor edge devices
- Experience managing teams that successfully productize Computer Vision (CV), 3D Machine perception (e.g., using images and point clouds for classification and dimensioning), and AI/ML technologies from conception to end, including establishing scientific vision for new programs based on multi-modal LLMs
- Experience managing joint hardware-software development, specifically designing and driving to production multi-sensor ensemble machine learning and computer vision systems for real-time decision making
