About this Job

Snapshot

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

About Us

The Gemini Robotics Applied team works at the intersection of Engineering, Product, and Community. The goal is to have our robotics models revolutionize development robotics applications. This role champions developer success by delivering seamless experiences across our model, tools and service offering. Through deep collaborations across Google, we empower developers by providing high-quality launch and onboard materials, technical outreach, and a supportive ecosystem for robotics developers of all backgrounds.

The Role

As a Robotics Research Engineer focusing on Developer Experience for Google DeepMind, you will serve as the technical bridge between our core teams and the external developer community. You are the trusted voice of the developer inside our organization and the expert technical voice of our organization to the world.

Your mission is to champion developer success and drive the adoption of our foundational models and tools within the robotics domain. This role requires a unique blend of deep technical expertise, genuine developer empathy, and strategic thinking to navigate the rapid evolution of generative AI and its application to robotics. You will actively shape our products, multiply the impact of launches, and scale the AI builders ecosystem globally.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prototyping and reference implementation: Act as the "zeroth user", build prototypes, write and maintain code examples and demos, evaluate developer workflow and provide critical, hands-on feedback to improve developer experience.
  • Own open source: Develop and maintain open source repositories and libraries, and improve the general project for external developers.
  • Technical Content and Education: Create and publish technical content, such as tutorials, integration guides, API documentation, video workshops, and deep-dive blogs, etc, that simplifies complex concepts and lowers the barrier to entry for developers.
  • Community Engagement Advocacy: Represent Google DeepMind as a technology advocate at major robotics conferences and events (e.g., ROSCon, ICRA, ...), attend developer meetups, etc. Actively engage with the community on forums (e.g. Discourse), GitHub, etc, answering questions, resolving problems, collecting feedback.
  • Strategy and Ecosystem Growth: Help define road map and strategy for new robotics models, SDK and tools. Drive the growth of our developer ecosystem.

About You

In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience of managing successful developer communities, especially in the area of robotics and foundation model.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining (open sourced) software libraries or applications with external developers.
  • Practical experience with robotics and/or foundation models; worked with popular robotics stack, tools and libraries.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Passionate about robotics and foundation models. Envision a future world in which robots are ubiquitous. Eager to accelerate the progress via building and developer community to maximize leverage.
  • Compassion with developers. Willing to help others understand a technical concept or onboard a new technology with examples, tutorials and documentations.
  • A portfolio of technical blog posts or public events engagements in robotics or foundation model areas.
  • Excellent verbal and oral communication.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $166,000 - $244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
