Research & Development HMI Design Intern
[Human Machine Interface (HMI) Advanced Development]
Course of Study
Pursing a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in Ergonomics, Cognitive science, Cognitive engineering, Human-Machine Interaction, or any related UI/UX field.
Term
SUMMER PROGRAM
10-12 weeks (Mondays through Fridays; 37.5 hours per week)
Internship to begin Monday, June 1, 2026
Location – NASI – 50255 Michigan Ave, Van Buren Township, MI 48111
$20 an hour (undergrad)
Qualifications
- Current Juniors OR Seniors planning to pursue a Master’s Degree OR students currently enrolled in a Master’s Program
- Must be an active student for the entire length of internship
- At least 1 year of work experience
Skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
Knowledge of human machine interfaces and interactions, cognitive science, or ergonomics is required. (If you are currently learning them in school, this is also acceptable.)
Experience in conducting user research for design validation is required.
Knowledge of psychology and/or generative AI is a plus.
Knowledge of HMI prototyping tools, such as Figma or ProtoPie is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Designs user clinics / user tests.
- Supports or conducts user clinics / user tests.
- Analyzes and creates documents.
- Researches or supports trends of HMI by literatures or letters.
- Analyzes North American customer data and technical trends to determine user demands.
- Consults with other vehicle development engineers to evaluate interfacing, operational, and performance requirements of overall systems mainly in cockpit.
- Collects data from prototype system, cleans/prepares the data, analyzes the data, and draws conclusions on the testing results.
- Supports Proof of Concept (PoC) stage for developing Subaru's next generation infotainment system, cockpit system including meters, displays, buttons, etc. which related to HMI. Writes technical reports.
- Collaborate with other experts including product managers, UI/UX designers, software engineers, and marketing experts.
