ABB is a global technology leader, delivering a comprehensive portfolio of solutions for the Process Industries sector. Our R&D Centre in Dundalk develops innovative measurement, computer imaging, and automation control technologies that help drive performance across the Pulp, Paper & Fiber (PP&F) industry.

We are seeking a Firmware Engineer with a strong understanding of embedded systems design to join our team. In this role, you will contribute to the development of next-generation sensors, measurement platforms, and actuators, working collaboratively within cross-functional engineering teams to bring innovative products to market.

Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll help run what runs the world, by taking on meaningful work that drives real impact.

  • Develop and maintain robust, scalable firmware solutions for next-generation products.

  • Design, implement, and integrate measurement and control algorithms on embedded platforms.

  • Produce high-quality firmware designs, code, and technical documentation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, project managers, and stakeholders to deliver project objectives.

  • Work within an Agile/Scrum environment, providing accurate estimates, planning, and progress updates.

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve firmware and system issues throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Support customers and manufacturing teams by investigating and resolving technical challenges.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute innovative ideas to enhance the product portfolio.

Qualifications for the Role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, with working experience in firmware development.

  • Strong Embedded C/C++ programming skills and experience developing firmware for embedded systems.

  • Experience writing low-level PCB drivers, board bring-up activities, and working directly with hardware, schematics, and electronics.

  • Knowledge of microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, Cortex-M) and peripherals including USB, UART, SPI, I²C, Timers, and PWM.

  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), data acquisition, signal processing, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus-RTU and RS232/RS485.

  • Understanding of networking concepts and implementation of TCP/IP and UDP communications.

  • Proficiency with development and debugging tools such as Visual Studio, IAR, and Lauterbach, alongside strong troubleshooting and test design skills.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, a passion for problem-solving and continuous learning; exposure to C# development and UML design tools is advantageous.
