Job Description:
The Robotics and Digital solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer – R&D Robotics for the Ottava R&D Team. This position is located in Santa Clara, CA.

The Ottava R&D team envisions a future for robotic intervention that is targeted, minimally invasive, and personalized. Building upon a deep understanding of patient and physician needs, we are developing a platform for the next evolution of soft-tissue robotic care.

You:
This Mechanical Engineer will work with other members of the Research & Development design team to craft complex mechanisms, structural but lightweight assemblies, motor driven actuators, and motion transmissions. This role is responsible for conceptual and detailed CAD design, drawings, related documentation, and design specifications. Your work will be focused on deriving and formalizing innovative designs based on user needs and product requirements. Key team collaborators include electrical engineering, robot controls, system integration, testing, external vendors, and internal manufacturing groups. As a member of the R&D Mechanical Engineering Team, you will contribute to the development of a complex robotic medical platform. For a self-motivated engineer, this is a unique opportunity to jump into the middle of a fast-paced environment passionate about quantitative results and delivery of a platform that exceeds expectations.
Performance Objectives and Responsibilities:
Create electromechanical prototypes which can be used to inform and drive design decisions.
Provide hands-on troubleshooting, process, and manufacturing assistance in support of a rapid development cycle.
Design safe, robust, and reliable solutions utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes and releasing design documentation through an ECO process.
Ability and willingness to work through all phases of product development from conceptualization to mass production.
Must be capable of working independently and in cross departmental engineering teams.
Be a positive, collaborative team member with a good honest work ethic.
Required Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field with 2+ years of experience developing mechanical hardware.
Working knowledge of mechanism design and various types of motors, encoders, sensors, and drivetrain-related components such as gears, lead screws, splines, cams, linear guides, belts & pulleys.
Mechanical design and analysis skills including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis. Ability to perform basic FEA.
Experience and proficiency using CAD to design and document both large and small parts and assemblies.
Demonstrated familiarity of designing for manufacturability and understanding of common manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal, casting, injection molding, and 3D printing.
Familiarity with making drawings following standard methodologies from AMSE Y14.5-2009 Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Experience working with vendors to select, source, quote, and procure off the shelf and custom designed components.
Basic knowledge of working in an ISO and FDA regulated environment.
Proven track record working well in a team environment and learning from others.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Experience in Robotic and/or Medical Device industry.
SolidWorks experience.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $106,000.00 to $170,200.00
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
