About this Job

Summary

GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized Physical AI company headquartered in Los Angeles, building Factory SuperIntelligence (FSI) through systems that learn, adapt, and develop genuine process intelligence across every part they touch. Our robots take on the tedious, hazardous, and ergonomically demanding work that has kept manufacturing dependent on a shrinking skilled workforce, delivering superhuman performance. Robotics has a demo problem. GMR doesn't. Our systems are in active production today, adapting autonomously to real geometries, real materials, and real process variation without reprogramming. We deliver our system through a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model that converts capital expenditure into an operating subscription, making Physical AI accessible to the manufacturers who need it most. We hire people who want to solve hard physical problems at an industrial scale.

We help manufacturers improve shop floor workers’ quality of life, increase production capacity, and reduce scrap, repair, and rework costs. As a Mechanical Design Intern you will join our Mechatronics & Design Team to collaborate with our engineering team onsite in our Gardena, CA office to support the design process from concept to implementation while learning and contributing to the engineering team's objectives in a collaborative environment.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Supporting engineers and designers in creating, modifying, and refining mechanical designs using SOLIDWORKS

  • Creating 2D drawings and 3D models of mechanical components or systems based on specifications provided by the engineering team

  • Assisting in the development and testing of prototypes, which may involve assembling components, conducting measurements, and documenting results

  • Collaborate cross functionally with internal teams to improve, develop and/or review product designs

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to help document assembly processes and test procedures

  • Work closely with a team of cross-functional engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware components with overall system design.

  • Prototype hardware considering design for manufacturability (DFM) using 3D Printing and/or CNC machines where appropriate

Export Control Requirements

In order to comply with the export regulations of the United States Government, it is required that the applicant must fall under one of the following categories: (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident (i.e. current green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

Minimum Quals

  • Must be able to support at least 30 hours onsite in Carson, CA beginning October 2026

  • Currently pursuing or have a BS degree in mechanical engineering, related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 1-2 years experience designing within SOLIDWORKS

  • 1-2 years experience demonstrating hands-on Hardware/Software skills

  • Experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings

  • Proven track record of strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams and customers

  • Ability to solve problems effectively in a collaborative environment

  • Must meet export control requirements in the United States and maintain ongoing work authorization beginning at the time of hire through the entirety of employment.
