Summary:
The Life Sciences Engineer III – Automation & Robotics is a senior-level technical expert and escalation leader responsible for leading and supporting Renovo Care’s laboratory automation, robotics, and integrated systems service operations. This role serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for laboratory automation platforms, robotic liquid handling systems, integrated instrumentation, and GxP-compliant automated workflows. The Engineer III provides advanced technical escalation support, drives service excellence, validates service content, supports pricing and labor models, and contributes to process optimization across Renovo’s life sciences service portfolio. This position functions as the final escalation point for complex automation service events and plays a critical role in training, mentoring, validation strategy, and service standardization across the engineering organization.
What you will do:
Technical Leadership & Escalation
- Serve as the primary SME and final escalation point for laboratory automation and robotics service events across Renovo Care
- Lead advanced troubleshooting of electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, software, and integration-related failures in automated systems
- Provide real-time triage, root-cause analysis, and coaching support to field engineers during complex service events
- Maintain direct technical responsibility for assigned automation platforms and integrated systems
Automation Platforms & Systems
- Support, service, and optimize multi-vendor laboratory automation platforms, including:
- Liquid handling systems
- Robotic work cells
- Integrated incubators, readers, and peripheral devices
- Install, configure, and optimize hardware, software, networking, and control systems at customer sites
- Support method execution, scripting, and workflow validation associated with automated platforms
- Support automation workflows for LC-MS prep, NGS, ELISA, protein purification, and high-throughput screening
Validation, Compliance & Documentation
- Develop, review, and execute IQ/OQ/PQ and validation strategies for automated laboratory systems
- Ensure compliance with GxP, FDA, EMA, and 21 CFR Part 11 requirements
- Generate and review qualification documentation, including:
- Risk assessments
- Performance qualification reports
- Calibration and verification records
- Support customer audits and regulatory inspections
Service Strategy, Pricing & Process Improvement
- Provide input into pricing models, labor hour definitions, tooling requirements, and parts inventory strategy for automation services
- Support Renovo Care, Scientific Services, and Relocations pricing tables by defining labor scope and technical complexity
- Identify opportunities to improve service delivery efficiency, training content, and escalation workflows
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to standardize automation service offerings and workflows
Training, Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
- Train and mentor Life Sciences Engineers on:
- Automation system maintenance and robotics troubleshooting
- Validation and qualification best practices
- Safe operation of automated platforms
- Contribute to the development and validation of SOPs, training materials, and service playbooks
- Act as a technical resource across Engineering, Operations, Sales, and Service Delivery teams
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Manage customer communications during service events, clearly explaining work performed and next steps
- Provide consultative guidance on preventive maintenance, system configuration, and optimization strategies
- Serve as a technical liaison between customers, OEM vendors, and internal Renovo teams
OEM & Platform Scope
The Engineer III provides SME-level support across multi-vendor laboratory automation ecosystems, including but not limited to:
Primary Automation & Liquid Handling OEMs
- Tecan (Evo, Fluent)
- Agilent (Bravo)
- Beckman Coulter (Biomek platforms)
- INTEGRA Biosciences (Assist Plus)
Integrated & Peripheral Systems
- INHECO (ODTC, incubators, shakers)
- Gyros Protein Technologies (Gyrolab xPand)
- Sartorius (Ambr systems)
- Automated plate readers, washers, sealers, barcode readers, and storage systems
Software, Controls & Integration
- OEM scripting environments (e.g., Hamilton Venus / HSL)
- Device-specific SDKs and APIs
- LIMS integration (e.g., LabX, Benchling, custom LIMS)
- SCADA and data historians (e.g., OSIsoft PI)
- 21 CFR Part 11–compliant systems
- SiLA2-based integrations
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience supporting life science laboratory equipment, with a strong emphasis on automation and robotics
- 5+ years of experience operating in GxP-regulated environments
- Demonstrated expertise with:
- Laboratory automation platforms
- Robotic liquid handling systems
- Integrated instrumentation and peripherals
- Proven experience troubleshooting hardware, software, and system integrations
- Strong understanding of validation lifecycles, change control, and regulated documentation
Education / Special Training:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or related scientific field (required)
- Advanced training in automation, robotics, scripting, or systems integration strongly preferred

Safety Requirements:
- Maintain a safe working environment for self and others if they come in contact within the biomed area in accordance with the facility’s policies
- Must follow OSHA guidelines in regard to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, radiation, sharp instruments and/or tools, hazardous liquids, and operating devices
- On-time completion of safety training assignments
- Must have sensory ability to distinguish hot & cold ranges of temperature, surfaces, fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and detect/distinguish colors
- Must be able be able to carry or lift up to 50 pounds routinely
