This role acts as a trusted authority within GMA, combining regulatory expertise with strategic advisory capabilities in robotics, automation, and autonomous systems. The specialist contributes to the GMA Knowledge strategy, leads robotics and automation-related initiatives, and supports the development of new regulatory, advisory, and digital services.
The role serves as the primary subject matter expert for robotics and automation compliance programs, supporting business growth, customer solutions, and regulatory intelligence activities. The specialist monitors emerging regulations, standards, and conformity assessment frameworks impacting robotics, industrial automation, service robotics, AI-enabled technologies, consumer robotic products, and autonomous systems, translating regulatory developments into actionable business insights and market access strategies.
The specialist may also represent UL Solutions in regulatory bodies, standards committees, industry working groups, robotics associations, and stakeholder forums related to robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary regulatory expert for Robotics & Automation, supporting global market access activities across multiple countries, regions, and regulatory frameworks.
Provide authoritative guidance on robotics, automation, autonomous systems, functional safety, and conformity assessment requirements, including applicable regulations, standards, certification schemes, and market access pathways.
Lead activities supporting GMA business expansion in robotics and automation-related services, including opportunity identification, scope definition, market assessment, and tracking of business results across COUs.
Support transversal knowledge across robotics, automation, autonomous systems, AI-enabled technologies, service robotics, consumer robotic products, and associated regulatory frameworks.
Advise GMA leaders and managers on strategy definition, initiative prioritization, regulatory developments, business opportunities, and performance monitoring related to Robotics & Automation.
Analyze and assess new, emerging, or complex regulations, standards, and conformity assessment requirements impacting robotics, industrial automation, service robotics, autonomous systems, smart manufacturing technologies, and AI-enabled products.
Contribute to the development and evolution of robotics and automation-focused GMA services, including digital, platform-based, and data-driven solutions.
Provide high-value advisory services to internal and external stakeholders regarding global compliance and market access strategies for robotics and automation products.
Act as a strategic advisor to business units and customers, translating complex technical and regulatory requirements into actionable compliance guidance and tailored service solutions.
Provide leadership and expert counsel on complex, high-impact, or non-standard robotics and automation projects, including cross-border and multi-stakeholder initiatives.
Represent UL Solutions in regulatory organizations, standards committees, robotics associations, industry working groups, conferences, and stakeholder meetings related to robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
Ensure compliance with the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security requirements.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Master's degree preferred.
8+ years of experience in robotics, automation, industrial systems, functional safety, certification, regulatory compliance, conformity assessment, or global market access.
Strong knowledge of robotics and automation standards, including:
- ISO 10218
- ISO/TS 15066
- ISO 13849
- IEC 62061
- IEC 61508
- IEC 60204-1
- ISO 13482
- IEC 60335 family standards applicable to automatic and robotic appliances
Strong understanding of global regulatory frameworks impacting robotics and automation technologies, including:
- EU Machinery Regulation
- EU AI Act
- Cyber Resilience Act
- Functional Safety frameworks
- Product compliance and conformity assessment requirements
Experience with certification, testing, conformity assessment, compliance engineering, regulatory consulting, or market access activities.
Proven ability to analyze emerging regulations, standards, and technologies and translate them into business impact and customer value.
Experience supporting business growth, service development, and strategic initiatives in technical or compliance-related environments.
Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience advising leadership teams, customers, regulators, industry associations, and government stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to operate in global, cross-functional environments and lead complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
Excellent communication, technical writing, analytical, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Participation in ISO, IEC, ANSI, UL, or other standards development committees.
Experience with AGVs, AMRs, collaborative robots, warehouse automation systems, service robots, consumer robotic products, or AI-enabled robotic technologies.
Knowledge of North American robotics and automation compliance requirements.
Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements applicable to connected and autonomous products.
Experience supporting manufacturers of robotics, industrial automation systems, smart manufacturing technologies, autonomous equipment, service robots, or robotic consumer products.
Experience in regulatory intelligence, standards monitoring, and market access strategy development.
Active participation in robotics industry associations, trade organizations, or professional networks.
Established relationships with robotics associations, regulators, industry groups, certification bodies, or other key stakeholders supporting robotics and automation sectors.
Experience collaborating with industry associations to support regulatory engagement, market access activities, standards development, or industry advocacy initiatives.
