About this Job

We are Skytree

Skytree enables a transition to a world with cleaner Air for everyone. We do this by developing and deploying smart technology that captures atmospheric carbon dioxide, enabling its use or storage to combat climate change and aid society and businesses around the world.

Born out of the European Space Agency (ESA), we are a global team of highly talented scientists, engineers and business professionals, supported by an experienced management team. Our working culture is based on a dynamic and smart approach to business with an open and understanding attitude to others and a desire to expand the boundaries of what is possible.

As we enter a new phase of growth, we are looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer with a focus driving innovation through new product development and the ability to lead a small team of design Engineers.

Your role

As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the product development process by lguiding a small team of Mechanical Design Engineers, working on the development of (new) Skytree products. Leveraging your extensive experience, (project) management skills and technical expertise, you will contribute to the innovation and optimization of mechanical designs, ensuring they meet the highest standards of functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.

You’ll make an impact by

  • Leading conceptualization and innovation, involving collaboration with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and contribute innovative ideas for enhancing product performance and functionality.

  • Leveraging your deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles to develop new concepts and solutions

  • Leading a team of peers, by example, facilitating them to deliver on spec and on time and fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture.

  • Utilizing advanced 3D modeling tools to create detailed mechanical designs and conducting simulations and analyses to validate designs for performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

  • Overseeing prototyping, rigorous testing, and collaboration with testing and quality assurance teams to validate design concepts and ensure compliance with specified requirements and standards.

  • Collaborating and communicating design concepts across teams and stakeholders while integrating mechanical components seamlessly into the overall product architecture with electrical, software, and industrial designers.

  • Optimizing design for cost-effective production by collaborating closely with manufacturing teams and providing support throughout the manufacturing process to address any design-related issues.

  • Creating detailed design documentation, including drawings and specifications, while ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.

  • Continuously learning about the latest advancements in mechanical engineering and design technologies, while implementing best practices and new techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process.

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field; advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) is an advantage.

  • Proven experience (typically 10+ years) in mechanical design engineering in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience as (technical) lead within a team focused on (new) product development and driving innovation.

  • Holistic, system-level approach to product development.

  • Experience with design of complex industrial equipment (low volume / high complexity).

  • Full product development lifecycle experience, including designing new and complex solutions “from scratch”.

  • Specific experience with several of the following:

    • Start/scale-up environments.

    • Sheet metal.

    • Design and development of low-volume/high-complexity equipment.

    • CFD simulations for gas flows and heat transfer.

    • Heat exchangers and heat pumps.

    • DFMA / Design for X.

    • FEM/FEA.

    • Industrial vacuum systems and challenges associated with the design of vacuum-based machinery.

    • GD&T and, generally, having to meet a high level of standards and requirements.

    • PFD and P&ID’s.

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software, such as Inventor, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools.

  • Proficiency with one or more other relevant tools such as Ansys (Fluent / Mechanical), PDM/PLM, Python, Matlab etc.

What you can expect

Apart from working with great colleagues and a competitive package, you can also expect:

  • A unique start-up environment offering organic professional and personal growth at one of the most innovative cleantech companies in Amsterdam!

  • A diverse (38+ nationalities) and fun team to work with.

  • Travel cost reimbursement (choose from an NS business card, lease bike, or 23ct p/km travel allowance).

  • Recharge with 25 vacation days, plus a little extra when life throws something special your way.

  • Enjoy the flexibility of hybrid work, with the option to work from home once a week.

  • A vibrant office close to the Science Park train station (5 minute walk!), as well as close to the highway.

  • Access to the Science Park and Amsterdam University cafeterias (and all the great and healthy meal options).

  • Enjoy a free lunch every Thursday, with Skytree picking up the bill, and stick around for after-work office drinks.

  • Fun activities, organised by our very own Champagne Committee (e.g. a cooking class or Canal Adventures at the heart of the city centre).

  • Stay fueled with tasty fruits and snacks - because work should be enjoyable too!

Note: we can offer work permit / visa sponsorship for exceptional candidates. We, however, currently do not offer a relocation package / remuneration in case you would need to move to The Netherlands for this position. Thanks for your understanding.

Skytree is engineering the CO₂ transition by building machines to capture CO₂ from the air and repurpose it for good: whether it’s reused across different industries or stored permanently. Our DAC technology transforms atmospheric CO₂ into a valuable resource: powering applications like renewable fuels and chemicals, greenhouse operations, beverage carbonation and water treatment. Our modular DAC machines and unique DAC Park architecture allow us to deploy in any climate, at scale - empowering more industries to switch to a circular CO₂ source and contribute to a cleaner planet. With more than 10 years of applied research starting at the European Space agency, we have the engineering excellence and the patented technology to enable the shift towards decarbonization. Our machines are already hard at work, capturing over 10M tonnes of CO₂ by 2030. Learn more about how we are engineering the CO₂ transition at https://skytree.tech/.
