There is an exciting opportunity to join Weyerhaeuser as an Industrial AI Intern in Drayton Valley, Alberta. This is a full-time temporary salaried position at the Drayton Valley Lumber mill for a period of 8-months or 12-months with an expected start date in April or May 2026. The intern’s primary responsibilities are to act as the key technical resource and support the implementation of AI solutions on two machine centers in different mill areas within the lumber manufacturing operations. This role provides hands-on exposure to industrial AI, image processing, automation systems, and manufacturing operations. This role reports to the Reliability Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow all safety policies and procedures in the mill, role model safe behaviors to enhance the safety culture and sustain our strong safety record
- Develop caring leadership for safety and treat safety as the highest priority at work
- Develop a good understanding of sawmill operations, process automation fundamentals, and reliability fundamentals
- Work closely with your assigned mentors and develop a good understanding of the mill process control systems
- Collaborate with the vendor and develop a strong understanding, knowledge, and skills on vendor provided AI Software/Application Tool
- Assist with image/video data collection, labeling, and model parameter development and evaluation
- Work with PLC/SCADA, sensors, and process data to contextualize AI outputs
- Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, and Automation teams
- Develop and test image processing solutions (object detection, classification, segmentation) using the AI Tool; this involves training the AI model using mill data, testing, validating the AI model to the desired accuracy
- Collaborate with mill process control leaders and lead the AI go-live process
- Document results, performance metrics, and recommendations for scaling
What You’ll Gain

Engineering or Computer Science student (preferably final year in Engineering or Computer Science program) or recent graduate
Knowledge of image processing or computer vision fundamentals
Comfortable learning new tools and working in hands-on industrial environments
Basic understanding of process control and automation systems (PLCs, SCADA, Sensors)
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Knowledge of image processing and machine learning applications in processing automation improvements or any other relevant applications
Knowledge of Python Programming or any other coding software
Must possess legal authorization to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in Electrical and Computer Engineering or Industrial Engineering
- Background in Computing Science with practical AI Application Experience
- Exposure to manufacturing, automation, reliability, or industrial data systems
- Other Engineering disciplines are considered with Industrial and AI experience
Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $42 per hour, with a standard work schedule of 40 hours per week.
Relocation assistance will be offered to individuals required to move to Drayton Valley.
Term: Must be available for the complete assignment of 8 or 12 months (based on the current pursuing year of Engineering program). Recent graduates are welcome to apply and will be considered for a 12 month term.
