Software Engineer – Flight Automation & Drone Integrations

At Airpelago, we are pioneering the inspection of power grids with drones. We combine modern drone technology, proprietary software, and expertise in drone regulations to help grid owners inspect and get insights about their assets, which our society is dependent on. As we continue to scale, we are looking for a Software Engineer to develop the flight automation software that makes our inspections autonomous, and to bring new drone platforms and payloads into our system.

Your mission

You will build and improve the software that plans, executes and monitors autonomous inspection flights. You will also develop integrations with new drone platforms and payloads, from evaluating an SDK to having the aircraft fly a full mission with our software in the field. You will work close to the hardware, close to the data, and close to the people who operate the system in production.

Responsibilities

● Develop and maintain our flight automation software, from mission planning to in-flight execution.

● Integrate new drone platforms, flight controllers, and payloads (cameras, LiDAR, sensors) into our system.

● Work with manufacturer SDKs and APIs, and evaluate new hardware for technical fit.

● Build the tooling and abstractions that let us support several drone platforms without duplicating work.

● Test and validate your work in the field, together with our operations and testing engineers.

● Debug issues that cross the software/hardware boundary: logs, telemetry, radio links, and sensors.

● Contribute to technical decisions on architecture, safety and reliability of autonomous flight.

● Take ownership of your domain end to end, from idea to production.

What we're looking for

● At least 3 years of software development experience.

● Experience integrating hardware and software - drones, cameras, sensors, embedded systems or robotics is a strong advantage.

● Comfort working with SDKs, APIs and vendor documentation of varying quality.

● Interest in getting out of the office: this role includes field testing with real aircraft.

● Structured approach to testing and safety in systems where failures have physical consequences.

● Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of a technical domain.

● Full proficiency in Swedish and English, both written and verbal.

● A valid B driver’s license, with comfort working outdoors and travelling for field testing.

● Experience with camera geometry is a strong plus: projection models, calibration (intrinsics/extrinsics), and coordinate transformations.

Experience with MAVLink and DJI SDKs is beneficial but not a requirement. Curiosity and the ability to learn a new platform quickly matter more to us!
