Salary Range: $94,695.00 - $120,737.00 Salary

This position will initially be based in Plymouth, MI, with a planned relocation to our Sunnyvale, CA office.

JOB SUMMARY:

Develops and maintains a structured safety case framework, performs ADK-specific hazard analyses, and integrates results into vehicle-level assurance activities. The role requires both technical depth in safety analysis and the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts to internal teams, external partners, and auditors. The engineer works closely with global Isuzu teams and ADK suppliers to ensure safe and reliable deployment of autonomous functions.The position will receive limited direction from the manager and will provide guidance to junior staff. Must be able to use independent judgment extensively.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

40% 1. Performs safety analysis of ADK software stack (perception, planning, control, middleware) using ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 methods.

20% 2. Defines safety requirements, safety goals, and assurance evidence; and maintains the ADK safety case framework.

15% 3. Continuously researches and updates ADK safety analysis methods; benchmarks industry practices and integrates lessons learned.

15% 4. Collaborates with validation teams on scenario-based testing, ODD coverage, and safety KPIs.

10% 5. Communicatessafety concepts and methods clearly across cross-functional teams, including global stakeholders and auditors.

6. Handles miscellaneous safety-related tasks as assigned.

  • Reports to: Supervisor, Model Based Development - Advanced Engineering

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

  • Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field preferred; Bachelors degree acceptable with six (6) years of relevant experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in functional safety, software/system safety analysis, or autonomous driving development
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 26262 (esp. Part 6 software), ISO 21448 (SOTIF)
  • Familiarity with UL 4600 safety assurance and/or ISO 21434 cybersecurity is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with safety analysis methods: HARA, STPA, FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, fault injection
  • Experience with ADK or ADS platforms (e.g., perception, planning, control systems) is highly desirable
  • Strong academic or professional track record demonstrating analytical and problem-solving skills

KNOWLEDGE

  • Foundational understanding of autonomous driving software stacks (perception, planning, control, localization)
  • Strong working knowledge of safety case methods and assurance argumentation (GSN)
  • Basic knowledge of scenario-based testing and ODD coverage metrics
  • Prior exposure to ADK supplier processes (Applied, Aurora, Plus, Zoox, etc.) preferred

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent PC skills in Microsoft Office
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to independently research and clearly structure safety analysis methods
  • Excellent communication skills capable of explaining complex safety concepts to diverse audiences
  • Skilled in safety tools and requirement management platforms (Polarion, DOORS, GSN editors, or equivalent)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional, global teams

PHYSICAL STANDARDS

The employee must be able to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer. This is primarily a sedentary position in a controlled office environment which requires only occasional reaching, stooping, and lifting of office files, reports or records, typically weighing 5 lbs. or less. Requires occasional light lifting (5-25 lbs). Must be able on rare occasions to bend, crawl, climb, crouch, kneel and reach above shoulder level in the performance of job duties. Must be able to work in hot and cold weather extremes.

Position requires up to 5% travel.

Pay scale for this position is between $94,695.00 and $120,737.00. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
