Control Engineering Graduate Programme

Duration:       2 years  Location:       Bury St Edmunds  Salary:           £42,000 per annum

Take control of your engineering career

Join our Control Engineering Graduate Programme and help design, configure, and maintain the automation systems that keep our factories running 24/7. You’ll work with technologies such as Distributed Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems — the backbone of modern manufacturing.

You’ll develop technical expertise across system design, commissioning, and optimisation, supported by experienced engineers and hands-on project work.

What you will be doing

  • Work with process and operations teams to understand how automation supports production.

  • Assist with the design, configuration, and testing of control systems and safety systems.

  • Develop and implement HMI graphics, control logic, alarms, and optimisation strategies.

  • Support commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting activities.

  • Learn about server administration, virtualisation, networking, system integration, and cybersecurity in industrial environments.

  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and participate in system upgrades.

What you will need

  • A minimum 2:1 degree (or predicted) in Control, Electrical, Electronic, Instrumentation, Automation, or a related Engineering discipline.

  • An understanding of automation or control principles, and curiosity to learn how they apply in real manufacturing environments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail in technical work.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work across engineering and operations teams.

  • Flexibility to be based at and travel between any of our UK sites — Newark, Bury St Edmunds, Wissington, Cantley, or Peterborough.

  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.

  • Alignment with our values: staying safe, driving to action, working together, respecting each other, and being open and flexible.

We are committed to creating an environment where all our people are treated with respect and given the opportunities to succeed. We want British Sugar to be a great, inclusive place to work for everyone.

A NOTE FOR RECRUITMENT AGENCIES:

Industrial ManufacturingFood & Beverage

British Sugar is the leading supplier to the British and Irish food and beverage markets. We operate at four advanced manufacturing plants across East Anglia and the East Midlands. We currently employ around 1,200 permanent and contract staff and indirectly support around 7,000 UK jobs in the wider economy. We employ technicians, apprentices, graduates and experienced professionals for roles across the business and throughout the supply chain including engineers, accountants and project managers. Over the past 10 years, we have recruited and trained over 80 graduates and 50 apprentices. Over 2,300 growers supply our factories with around 8 million tonnes of sugar beet each year, which we process into up to 1.2 million tonnes of sugar. Sugar production is at the heart of our operations but using our highly integrated approach to manufacturing, we aim to transform all of our raw materials into sustainable products. We produce 500,000 tonnes of animal feed from sugar beet pulp. We recycle stones for building, lime for soil conditioning and soil for landscaping. Using our Combined Heat & Power plants, we export enough electricity to power 120,000 homes. We were also the first company to manufacture Bioethanol in the UK. Over the past five years, we have invested over £300m in our advanced manufacturing plants at Bury St Edmunds, Cantley, Newark and Wissington to make them as efficient and productive as possible.
