Summary basic function of the role

The basic function of an Automation Technician is to support the installation, maintenance, and optimization of automated systems and machinery used in industrial or manufacturing environments. This role ensures that equipment operates efficiently and reliably by performing tasks such as programming control systems, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, conducting routine inspections, and collaborating with engineering and production teams to implement improvements. The technician plays a critical role in minimizing downtime, enhancing productivity, and maintaining safety and quality standards across automated operations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install and configure automated machinery and control systems
  • Set up production equipment to meet operational specifications
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
  • Configure and maintain HMI (Human-Machine Interface) systems
  • Use CAD software to design or modify control logic
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on automation equipment
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and software faults
  • Conduct performance tests to ensure systems meet defined parameters
  • Calibrate sensors and instruments for accuracy and compliance
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and system changes
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams
  • Train operators and maintenance staff on system use and safety protocols
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards
  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance system efficiency and reliability

Education and Experience

  • AHigher Vocational Training qualification (Grado Superior)in fields such asIndustrial Automation,Electromechanics,Mechatronics, orIndustrial Electronics. This is often the most direct and recognized path into the profession.
  • Alternatively, aBachelors degreeinIndustrial Electronics and Automation Engineeringor a related technical field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics) is also common, especially for more advanced roles
  • English language: Professional working proficiency. Ability to read technical documentation, write service reports/emails, and communicate with international customers and internal teams.

Physical Demands

Employee may have to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight. Employee may have to lift tools up to 50 pounds in weight. Employee will have to be able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites. This can include occasional ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like. Employee will need to move about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another. Employee will need to operate machinery and/or power tools, motor vehicles, and heavy equipment. Employee will need to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations. Employee will need to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. Employee can work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time. Will have repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Work Environment

Primary work environment is a manufacturing environment where following appropriate safety protocols would be required. While in the warehouse employee may be exposed to outdoor elements (such as precipitation and wind) and/or high levels of noise.
